Session 51 - Star Formation & Chemical Evolution of Galaxies.
Display session, Tuesday, January 16
North Banquet Hall, Convention Center
The HST/WFPC2 has revealed a wealth of new information concerning the image characteristics of field galaxies at faint flux limits (Driver et al. 1995, Cowie et al. 1995, Glazebrook et al. 1995 ). Among many possible approaches to the analysis of these images, we explore one which is intended to be specifically related to the current rate of formation of massive stars, namely a pseudo-Fourier transform analysis suggested by Isserstedt amp; Schindler (1986). This yields an index that measures the relative power at high spatial frequencies, the results of which are then correlated with optical and near-infrared colours as an independent measure of the star formation rate.
