Session 58 - Gamma Rays & Cosmic Rays.
Oral session, Tuesday, January 16
Salon del Rey South, Hilton
We have developed a numerical simulation to calculate multiwavelength spectra resulting from the interaction of cosmic rays with interstellar gas. This model includes pion-producing interactions of cosmic-ray protons and \alpha particles with diffuse gas and dust. The \pi^\circ mesons decay into \gamma rays, whereas the \pi^\pm mesons decay into e^\pm. We calculate the synchrotron, bremsstrahlung, and Compton-scattered emission produced by primary and secondary e^\pm. The electron spectrum takes into account evolution through energy losses and escape after injection. The results of this model are used to fit the multiwavelength spectra from the Galactic Center, the Orion molecular cloud complex, and unidentified EGRET sources possibly associated with young supernova remnants.
