[67.01] MicroJansky Radio Sources and Fluctuations in the Cosmic Microwave Background

R. B. Partridge (Haverford Coll.)

We have imaged a 315" (FWHM) field at 8.44 GHz with a total of 159 hours of integration time, using the VLA in its D and C configurations. Resolution in the image is 6", and the rms noise 1.49 microJy. Forty sources were detected in a complete sample above 7.5 microJy; some of these sources and their identifications in an HST image are discussed in Windhorst et al. (Nature 375, p. 471 [1995]). We have devised a Monte Carlo technique to simulate the properties of sources with flux densities below 7.5 microJy. The simulations include the effects of clustering and the distribution of radio source sizes. When compared to our observational results, they allow us to set limits on radio source counts at microJy levels, and to establish upper limits on fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background. At arcminute scales, deltaT/T is below 10e-5.
