[73.05] The UH 8K CCD Mosaic Camera

M. R. Metzger, G. A. Luppino, S. Miyazaki (IfA)

A large-format CCD mosaic camera with 64 megapixels (8192x8192) has been constructed for wide-field imaging at Mauna Kea. It provides a 0.5^\circ square field when used at the prime focus of CFHT, with a pixel size of 0.2\arcsec\ that adequately samples the excellent seeing conditions. The focal plane consists of 8 Loral 2048x4096 CCDs mounted in custom packages, enclosed in an LN_2-cooled dewar with a hold time exceeding 24 hours. The dewar is integrated with a large shutter and filter slide, with an optional wide-field corrector element for use at the UH 88'' telescope. We discuss both the construction of the instrument and some of the early observations, particularly new data on weak lensing from clusters and large-scale structure.
