Session 74 - Ground-Based Instruments.
Display session, Wednesday, January 17
North Banquet Hall, Convention Center
Throughout the multi--year, looping voyage of Galileo from Earth to its ultimate rendezvous with Jupiter in December 1995, several ground--based observatories provided astrometric coordinates of the spacecraft's various targets. This report covers the contributions made by the USNO Flagstaff station to this effort. These include astrometry of Gaspra and Ida --- the first two asteroids encountered by an Earth--based spacecraft, the planet Jupiter, and the Galilean Moons. The instrumentation, observing strategy, and astrometric reductions are described.
