[75.06] The Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS): Implications for Asteroid Studies

The Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) will produce a digital map of the entire sky in the J (1.25\mum), H (1.65\mum), and K_s (2.17\mum) photometric bands to a 10\sigma limiting point-source sensitivity of 15.8, 15.1, and 14.3 magnitudes, respectively. Although galactic and extragalactic scientific objectives provide the motivation for conducting the survey, 2MASS will record J, H, and K_s magnitudes for thousands of asteroids with sufficient precision to permit rudimentary classification. 2MASS provides single-epoch coverage of most of the sky, requiring a prediction of the asteroid's position at the time of observation in order to extract fluxes. 2MASS coordinates for point sources will be accurate to <0.5^\prime\prime. The 2MASS scans will have a spatial overlap of 10% between successive observations, providing two epochs separated in time by between 1 and 12 minutes for a small fraction of the sky. 2MASS may also scan one or more 0.1 square degree calibration fields in the ecliptic on a daily or weekly basis.
