Session 75 - 2MASS.
Display session, Wednesday, January 17
North Banquet Hall, Convention Center
The 2MASS project will produce a catalog of roughly 100 million point source detections in the J/H/K_s bands. This paper describes the automated process by which the absolute positions and brightnesses of these objects will be measured from the 10-20 Tbytes of raw image data produced during the survey. Detected objects will have RA/Dec (J2000) positions accurate to < 0.5 arcseconds relative to the Hipparchos/Tycho reference catalog star positions. The absolute photometric accuracy of 2MASS point source magnitudes will be \le 0.10 magnitudes for J/H/K_s magnitudes of 15.8, 15.1, and 14.3 respectively, and \le 0.05 magnitudes for sources brighter than 14.4, 14.0, and 13.5, respectively. The list of stars will also be 99% complete and 99.99% reliable in the faintest magnitude bin.
An analysis of position reconstruction and photometry techniques is made using sets of data obtained on a prototype (single-channel) camera. The point source positional and photometric specifications of the survey can either be met or are close to being met using the current prototypical processing pipeline.
