Display session, Wednesday, January 17

We present a comparison of the two most commonly used SPH artificial viscosities in 3D simulations of accretion disks in mass transferring binaries. We find that if only the terms which are linear with respect to the velocity differences are used, and the viscosity is allowed to act on both approaching and receding particles, the disks spread into the regions where the 3:1 corotational resonance is capable of exciting eccentric modes in low mass-ratio systems. The resulting disks undergo prograde precession which is believed to be responsible for the observed superhump phenomenon in cataclysmic variables.
