Session 95 - X-Ray Galaxies and Clusters.

The ASCA satellite, with its moderate energy resolution and broad bandpass x-ray detectors, has provided many new insights into the nature of the x-ray emission from elliptical galaxies. While the emission from luminous galaxies is dominated by \sim 0.7 keV hot gas, a hard component is present and sometimes dominant in fainter systems. I will discuss the nature of this hard component, the implications of these observations for the dark-to-luminous mass ratio in elliptical galaxies, and their impact on our understanding of the scatter in the x-ray vs. optical luminosity relationship.
