[103.19] Fundamental Parameters of Field Horizontal Branch Stars

R. O. Gray (Appalachian State Univ), C. J. Corbally (Vatican Observatory), A. G. D. Philip (Union College and ISO)

The fundamental parameters (effective temperature, gravity and [M/H]) as well as estimates of the reddening of a set of Field Horizontal Branch star candidates have been determined using synthetic Strömgren uvby colors and synthetic spectra. The synthetic colors and spectra were generated by the spectral synthesis code SPECTRUM, which uses the stellar atmosphere models of Kurucz. Good to excellent fits were achieved for most of these A-stars, except for two which show large Balmer jumps incompatible with the width of the Balmer lines. We speculate on the physical causes of this discrepancy. We also noted that there was a tendency in about 20% of the stars for the Ca II K-lines to be slightly stronger than those in the synthetic spectra.
