[3.08] The WIYN Open Cluster Study: First results on NGC 188

T. von Hippel (U. Wisconsin), A. Sarajedini (NOAO)

We present a description of a large study of open clusters which is being undertaken at the WIYN telescope. We also present our early results on the old (age \geq 5 Gyrs) open cluster NGC 188. We have studied this cluster at the KPNO 0.9m telescope to obtain wide field photometry of the bright stars, and at the WIYN telescope to obtain much deeper photometry, to V \geq 24. We present color magnitude diagrams spanning \approx 13 magnitudes in V, vastly improving upon previous, mostly photographic, work. We use the observed color magnitude diagram and luminosity function to determine the age, distance and reddening of this cluster. We also report on the low mass main sequence luminosity function and its implications for the cluster IMF.
