[6.10] X-ray Cluster Evolution from ROSAT Survey

A. Vikhlinin, W. Forman, C. Jones, B. McNamara (SAO)

We investigate the properties of X-ray clusters detected on the basis of the spatial extent of their X-ray emission in a set of 250 ROSAT/PSPC pointed observations at high galactic latitudes. We detect 107 clusters in a surveyed area of 40 square degrees. An optical identification program is underway. Having few available redshift measurements, we attempt to address the following questions: 1) What is the ``quality'' of the X-ray selected sample? and; 2) What can the X-ray data alone tell us about the evolution of cluster parameters? We find that the statistical properties of the sample are well-understood, and that the data show no evidence for strong evolution of X-ray clusters out to z\sim 0.5-1. Future redshift measurements should not drastically change our conclusions.
