[12.11] A Near-IR Survey for Strong Line Emission at High Redshift

We report on a near-infrared narrowband survey for strong line emission from galaxies at high redshift. Over 300 square arcminutes have been covered to a 3\sigma limiting line flux of approximately 3\times10^-16 erg cm^-2 s^-1. The survey targets known, high-redshift objects, either active nuclei or strong absorption-line systems, which place one of the redshifted optical emission lines (H\alpha, [O III] \lambda5007\,ÅH\beta, or [O II] \lambda3727\,Åinto a narrowband filter in one of the near-IR JHK bands. This method is not as sensitive to the effects of dust as surveys based on the Ly\alpha emission line. Sufficient volume has been covered to challenge simple models of galaxy formation. One emission line object has been identified, and the line spectroscopically confirmed.
