[18.02] Disk-locking and the slow rotators in young star clusters

S. Barnes (Yale U.), M. Pinsonneault (Ohio State U.), S. Sofia (Yale U.)

We demonstrate that the slowest rotators in young star clusters cannot be explained by the same stellar models that account for the ultra-fast rotators. An additional ingredient seems to be needed. Various authors have suggested that disk-locking on the pre-main sequence might be responsible for creating the slowest rotators. We confirm this suggestion. Using the simplest formulation of disk-locking and the same basic stellar models, we show that disk lifetimes of the order of millions of years suffice to explain the presently available rotational period observations.
