[37.03] Spectroscopic Diagnostic Techniques with the SOHO Ultraviolet Coronagraph Spectrometer

The SOHO Ultraviolet Coronagraph Spectrometer (UVCS/SOHO) uses spectroscopic diagnostic techniques and polarimetry to determine velocity distributions, temperatures, outflow velocities and densities of protons, electrons, and several minor ions in the extended solar corona. This paper describes the initial use of these techniques with UVCS/SOHO. Velocity distributions are derived from the observed spectral line profiles. In some cases, grating scans are used to improve the spectral resolution. The Doppler dimming method is used to determine radial outflow velocities and spectral line shifts are used for line of sight velocity measurements. The electron densities are derived from visible polarized radiance measurements. The status of attempts to derive electron temperatures from observations of electron scattered HI Lyman-alpha will be presented.
