We present near infrared images of the cometary ultracompact HII region G29.29-0.02. From the ratio of Br\gamma to 1.3cm flux we estimate the extinction to be A_K = 2.2 \pm 0.1, and this allows us to unambiguously identify the ionizing star. We measure a projected separation of 2.8 arcsec between the ionizing star and the putative bow shock. Puzzlingly, the ionizing star appears to be somewhat more luminous at K than expected for a main-sequence O star, but it does not appear to have an infrared excess. Our data strengthen a previous suggestion that the ultracompact HII region is associated with a cluster of young stars.
