Session 49 - First Results from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO).
Oral session, Tuesday, June 11
Wisconsin Center,
The SOHO Ultraviolet Coronagraph Spectrometer (UVCS/SOHO) is being used to observe the extended solar corona from 1.25 to 10 R_\sun from Sun center. Initial observations of polar coronal holes, polar plumes, equatorial streamers and the diffuse mid-latitude corona will be presented. The observations include measurements of spectral line profiles for HI Lyman alpha and beta, and O VI 103.2 and 103.7 nm. Line intensities for Mg X 61.0 nm, Si XII 49.9 and 52.0 nm, S X 119.6 nm, Fe XII 124.2 nm and several other minor ions have been observed. Observations with moderate time resolution (about 1 minute) at one strip of the corona will also be presented. Preliminary results for derived proton and O VI velocity distributions and initial indications of outflow velocities for protons, and O VI will be discussed as well as preliminary results for other spectroscopic diagnostics techniques. This research is supported by NASA Contract NAS5-31250 to the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, by the Italian Space Agency and by Switzerland.
