[57.11] The first Ultraviolet spectropolarimetric observations of Io

The Wisconsin Ultraviolet Photopolarimeter Experiment (WUPPE) observed Io on March 4, 9 and 16 1995 in the wavelength range 2100 - 3200ÅThe albedo measurements are consistent with the surface being about 40% covered in an SO_2 frost. The polarization of the latter two observations (orbital phase \phi=286^\circ and 268^\circ, respectively) are consistent with the presence of two polarized regions which are either associated with the volcanic site Pele or Hephaestus Patera and Viracocha Patera.
