[69.05] Simulations of Magnetic Field Effects on Solar Oscillation Ring Diagrams

Solar oscillation ring diagrams are an effective technique for inferring the horizontal velocity in the solar convection zone as a function of heliographic position and depth. While the signature of the velocity in the diagram is a shift in the central position of the rings, the shape of the rings contains information on the subsurface temperature and magnetic field. Direct detection of the velocity and magnetic fields in the convection zone will provide important input to theories of the solar activity cycle, convection, and the dynamo.

We present here the results of simulating ring shape variations arising from magnetic effects. Simple polytropic models containing various magnetic field profiles are used to construct artificial oscillation ring diagrams. We then determine the altered ring shapes, invert for the magnetic field, and compare the results of the inversion to the field of the model to place limits on the sensitivity of the technique.
