[70.17] Ne/O, Mg/O, and Fe/O Abundances Derived from Spectroscopic and SEP Analysis

B. Islam, J. T. Schmelz (Rhodes College)

Ne/O. Mg/O, and Fe/O abundances derived from 33 Solar Maximum Mission Flat Crystal Spectrometer spectra are compared with those derived from the in situ Solar Energetic Particle analysis of Reames (1995, Adv. Space Res., 15 41). The spectra were obtained from non-flaring, quasi-stable active regions and include lines of the Mg XI (9.17 ÅNe IX (13.45 ÅFe XVIII (14.22 ÅFe XVII (16.78 Åand O VIII (18.97 Åwhich were used in this study. With a temperature determined from the ratio of the Fe XVIII to Fe XVII line fluxes, the abundance ratios are obtained using:

F_Ne,Mg,Fe øver F_O = A_Ne,Mg,Fe\ G_Ne,Mg,Fe(T_e) øver A_O\ G_O(T_e) \Rightarrow A_Ne,Mg,Fe øver A_O

where F is the line flux, A is the abundance, and G(T) is the emissivity function.
