Scientific Potential of the Multiband Imaging Photometer for SIRTF (MIPS)

The MIPS uses arrays of impurity band conduction Si:As, Ge:Ga, and stressed Ge:Ga to provide three spectral bands for imaging and efficient mapping at 24, 70, and 160 microns respectively. In addition, a spectrometer allows the instrument to measure spectral energy distributions between 50 and 100 microns at a resolution of about 5the observing modes for MIPS and the expected performance, including estimates of the effects of source confusion and ionizing particle hits. We show that the instrument will be able: 1.) to make deep far infrared maps of the sky to search for highly redshifted ultraluminous galaxies; 2.) to resolve debris systems around nearby stars, including systems on a scale similar to the Kuiper Belt; and 3.) to conduct a broad variety of additional scientific investigations.
