[5.14] The NOAO Educational Outreach Program

S. H. Jacoby (NOAO)

The K-12 Educational Outreach activities of the National Optical Astronomy Observatories will be presented. The three primary objectives are: direct involvement in local classrooms, the development of instructional materials, and the use of NOAO's research environment to enhance the professional development of inservice science teachers. To attain these objectives, NOAO is the lead institution for the expansion of Project ASTRO into the Tucson area. With support from the NASA IDEA Grant program, classroom materials have been developed on the themes of Comet Hale-Bopp and The Age of the JewelBox Cluster, and we're working with members of the NOAO Outreach Advisory Board to develop a national program of summer workshops in support of research based science education for middle and high school teachers. Additional information and sample materials will be available.
