[5.16] City Stars: A Workshop for Inner City Teachers

N. Grice (Boston Museum of Science)

In 1994, Dr. Paul Gorenstein of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and The Charles Hayden Planetarium, Boston received a NASA AGSE grant to develop a special workshop for Boston-area inner city teachers with little, or no background in astronomy. The objective of these 3-hour workshops was to provide some practical classroom tools by which teachers may enhance the awareness and understanding of astronomy and space science among their students. Teachers received instruction on eight basic astronomy concepts and demonstrations of inexpensive hands-on astronomy activities for the classroom. Following the success of the 1994 City Stars teacher's workshops, Dr. Gorenstein and The Charles Hayden Planetarium, Boston received a NASA IDEA grant to conduct two additional City Stars workshops, held in October 1996. This paper will display the instructional materials we developed and highlight our experiences in presenting the City Stars workshops.
