[28.04] The Small-Scale Angular Distribution of Gamma-Ray Bursts Using Combined BATSE/Ulysses\/ Localization

The existence of small-scale clustering in the angular distribution of gamma-ray burst locations would provide strong evidence against a cosmological origin. Numerous studies performed thus far have failed to identify any conclusive indication of clustering, but the sensitivity was typically poor due to inaccurate burst locations and/or few events. We improve on the earlier studies by analyzing more than 250 bursts which have been localized by the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) and the two-spacecraft Compton\//Ulysses\/ Interplanetary Network. Combined BATSE/Ulysses\/ localization (typical error ``boxes'' \ll 1 deg^2) of the numerous events in this catalog provides superior sensitivity to small-scale clustering and burst recurrence. We present results from the preliminary spatial analysis of the BATSE/Ulysses\/ catalog and discuss implications for burst repetition models.
