[37.03] A Comparison of Three Tests for Substructure in X-ray Clusters

P. Rogers Jr., G. Rhee (Physics Dept. UNLV)

We present a comparison of three tests for substructure in rich galaxy clusters. The data we use are ROSAT PSPC X-ray images of a sample of clusters drawn from the ACO catalog. We have new redshift data for all the compared clusters. These clusters span a wide range of morphologies, luminosities, and velocity dispersions. A new method (wavelet analysis) has been adapted to the problem of detection of substructure in X-ray clusters (Starck et al 1996). We compare the results with two other methods; the 'center shift' method of Mohr et al. and the moment method of Buote and Tsai. These methods are somewhat complementary and taken together should produce a complete and quantitative description of substructure in our sample.
