[37.10] The Effect of Substructure on The Final State of Matter in An X-Ray Cluster

We investigate the role early substructure plays in determining the final thermal state of X-ray clusters.

The n-body code with hydrodynamics, Hydra, was used to simulate the formation of X-ray clusters. Each run contained 643 of both dark matter and gas particles. The initial perturbations were of the form of a power law. This initial density distribution was smoothed by top-hats of radius 7 h^-1 Mpc and 14 h^-1 Mpc to produce two more initial density fields. These three initial distributions were then evolved separately until dominant clusters had formed.

There is a greater degree of substructure in the final states of the clusters formed from initial distributions containing substructure. A moderate (>1.4 ×) increase in the gas temperature is found, as well. The increase in temperature is found not to be due to the increased amount of substrucure in the final state. Instead, it is directly related to the increase in mass of the cluster when the cluster is evolved from unsmoothed conditions. The reasons for the increase in the mass in the presence of substructure is explored.
