[38.09] The Nucleus and Stellar Populations of the dE,N Galaxy NGC 5206.

NGC 5206 is a nearby example of a strongly nucleated dwarf elliptical galaxy (dE,N). Little is known about the physical properties of dE,N nuclei. We seek to answer the following questions. Does the stellar population change between the nucleus and the surrounding galactic envelope? How do the ages and metallicities of these two components compare? Are the physical dimensions and light profiles of the nucleus comparable to those of Galactic globular clusters, conistent with the idea that globular clusters are the surviving remnants of merged dE,N galaxies? With these questions in mind, we present a preliminary analysis of Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 images and ground-based images of NGC 5206. Special attention is given to the BVI surface brightness profiles and to gradients in color with galactocentric distance. We also present plans for continued study of this interesting galaxy.
