[54.03] Dynamical Friction in Barred Galaxies

V. P. Debattista, J. A. Sellwood (Rutgers University)

Observations of barred galaxies suggest that bars are in rapid rotation. Simulations show that in the presence of a massive halo, dynamical friction quickly slows down the bar. This problem is not present if the galaxy has a less massive halo, similar to a maximum disk model.
