[59.02] Particle Acceleration in Astrophysical Settings: The Cosmic-ray Connection

T. K. Gaisser (Bartol Research Institute)

High energy particles play an important role in energetic sources and in the dynamics of the interstellar medium. The energy region above 100 TeV is crucial for understanding the origin of galactic cosmic rays because this is a characteristic maximum energy for acceleration by supernova remnants, which are likely cosmic particle accelerators. I will review what is known about spectrum and elemental composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays in this context. I will also discuss complementary information from gamma-ray astronomy.
