[68.12] Infrared Imaging Polarimetry of Galaxies

T. J. Jones (U Minn)

Imaging polarimetry at 1.65 and 2.2 microns for two galaxies and an interacting system of galaxies is presented. These observations are interpreted through comparison with the characeristics of interstellar polarization in the Milky Way. NGC 4565, a nearly edge-on normal spiral, shows highly ordered polarization vectors in the dust lane. NGC 891, a more acitve edge-on spiral displays more disorder in its polarization. Arp 299, a luminous interacting system shows evidence of a strong polar outflow of gas from the starbursitng nucleus of the Eastern member.
