Session 68 - Disk Galaxies.

The Position Sensitive Proportional Counter on-board ROSAT imaged the spiral galaxy NGC 55 for 18.9 ksec. Twenty-two point-like X-ray sources are detected covering the PSPC field-of-view, of which 7 sources are candidate members of NGC 55. The spectra of the brightest candidate member sources are consistent with a heavily absorbed source or a foreground star. None of the brightest sources appear to be variable. One source may be the most distant known supersoft source. Weak diffuse emission is detected in the plane of the galaxy above 0.5 keV. A hot plume appears to align with an H I plume detected in a VLA total H I map of NGC 55. This plume may represent hot gas blown out of the galaxy.
