[70.05] The Shapes of the Galactic Bar and Old Stellar Disk

H. Freudenreich (Hughes STX)

Using the DIRBE J-, K-, L-, and M-band maps of surface brightness, from which the zodiacal light has been removed, I have derived a model of the three-dimensional luminosity distribution of the old stellar disk of the Galaxy and its central bar. The model includes a warped disk with a central hole and a radially truncated bar. Model and data are in excellent agreement over the entire sky with the exception of areas in which there are known concentrations of dust associated with molecular clouds.
