We have measured the radial profile of the H_\alpha absorption strength across the globular cluster M5. We have detected a clear gradient in the sense of a increasing line-strength towards the center. Based on stellar calibrations and simple population models, we discuss the observed H_\alpha gradient in terms of mass segregation effects, and set limits for a metallicity gradient and for an age spread in the cluster.
