[77.10] Variable Stars Within Visual Binary Systems

This study discusses UBV observations of 430 selected visual binaries. They were obtained at the Flagstaff Station of the USNO. The purpose of the program was to detect variable stars within known binary systems. To be defined as a new variable differences in measured light had to be equal to or greater than a tenth of a magnitude in V. This conservative criterion is well above the observational error and lends confidence to the detection rate. Thirty-four new variable stars have been detected, three are eclipsing binaries. Light curves are described together with a discussion of variables in binary systems. A model of composite photometry has been derived and is presented super- imposed upon the ZAMS. This project adds evidence to the theory of cloud formation of stars and improves upon the statistics of binaries.
