[88.02] Measuring the Angular Power Spectrum of the Anisotropy in the CMB

C. B. Netterfield (Caltech)

The Saskatoon experiment has measured the angular power spectrum of the anisotropy in the CMB over angular scales from l=54 (\approx 3\deg) to l=404 (\approx 0.45\deg). This HEMT amplifier based experiment found evidence for a distinct rise in the angular power spectrum from \delta T_l \equiv \sqrtl(2l+1)<|a^m_l|^2>/4\pi = 49^+8_-5\, \muK at l=87 to \delta T_l=85^+10_-8\, \muK at l = 237, as generally predicted by many models of structure formation. To improve on these measurements, sensitivity to a wider range of angular scales and lower noise are desired. Three balloon borne experiments which are designed to accomplish this are the HEMT/SIS based experiments which are designed to accomplish this are the HEMT/SIS based QMAP experiment, which has been flown successfully in 1996, and the bolometer based MAXIMA and BOOMERANG experiments, which are scheduled to fly in 1997.
