[115.02] A Complete Sample of Galaxy Pairs

T. E. Nordgren (Cornell U.), J. N. Chengalur (GMRT), E. E. Salpeter, Y. Terzian (Cornell U.)

HI velocities have been obtained for 132 galaxy pairs chosen from the CfA and SSRS galaxy redshift catalogs. The 21cm HI observations have accuracies of \pm 5 km/s. Selection criteria, including a maximum projected separation of 1.5 Mpc, a maximum velocity difference of 250 km/s and a maximum number density of surrounding galaxies were applied to the catalogs and the observed sample is complete. No consideration has been given in the selection of these pairs towards tidal morphology or similarity in size or magnitude between pair members. We find evidence for bound galaxy pairs with projected separations as great as a megaparsec and are able to gauge the effects of various isolation requirements on the tidal morphology of close galaxy pairs and the distribution of velocity differences. We find no indication of galaxy pair redshift quantization.
