[3.06] On the Origin of Optical Filaments in Clusters of Galaxies

R. D. Mohr Jr., R. A. Dupke, R. E. White III (U. Alabama)

We present preliminary results of a test of competing scenarios for the formation of dusty optical filaments in the dominant galaxies at the centers of some cluster cooling flows. Two models are compared: the capture or disruption of gas-rich galaxies (Sparks, Ford amp; Kinney 1993) and the standard cooling flow condensate model (Mathews amp; Bregman 1978). The pros and cons of each model are discussed based on detailed morphological analysis of filaments and their possible association with galaxies in Abell 1795 and Abell 426.
