[5.06] Wide Field Spectroscopic Observations of Comet Hale-Bopp

J. Kielkopf, P. Graham (U. Louisville)

A wide field spectral imaging telescope was used to record spectra of Comet Hale-Bopp from July 1996 through May 1997. The instrument has a spectral resolution of 4 Å\/ covering 4500-8500 ÅThe angular resolution of 11^\prime\prime provides a field of view of approximately 3^\circ. Preliminary analyses of the spectra show the development and spatial extent of neutral and ionized gases in the coma and ion tail.
