[6.05] The Abundance of Interstellar Cadmium

U. J. Sofia, K. A. Matthews (Villanova Univ.), D. M. Meyer (Northwestern Univ.)

We have obtained high signal-to-noise, high resolution absorption spectra of the Cd II \lambda2145Å\space transition toward four stars with the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. Preliminary analyses of these data indicate that Cd is more abundant in the interstellar medium than would be predicted from solar reference abundances and the element's expected depletion onto dust grains. Cadmium is mainly produced by the s-process in low and intermediate mass AGB stars. Therefore the degree to which this element is overabundant in the ISM can, and will, be used to quantify s-process yields and the cumulative addition of this material into the ISM.
