[32.05] Optimization of Choices for Survey Mission Parameters and Possible Implementation

Using new CdZnTe detector technology, a wide-field imaging instrument can now be envisioned that would perform a hard x-ray survey at the sub-milliCrab sensitivity level, 2 orders of magnitude more sensitive than the previous HEAO 1 survey. Such an instrument could also monitor the sky daily for transient sources and provide rapid positions to the astronomical community. A key scientific theme would be studying black holes of all size scales, from AGN population studies in the survey to galactic black hole transient detections in the monitoring. The mission requirements are: 1) large field-of-view to monitor as much sky as possible, 2) few-arcminute angular resolution for counterpart identification, and 3) mCrab or better sensitivity to push significantly beyond HEAO 1 and CGRO capabilities. This paper will trace mission requirements from scientific goals to instrumental parameters.
