[36.03] RXTE Discovery of kHz Variability in the X-ray Flux of 4U 1636-536

W. Zhang, J. H. Swank, N. E. White (GSFC), I. Lapidus (U. Sussex)

Since its launch on 30 December 1995, the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) has discovered kHz variability in a dozen galactic X-ray binaries. In the paper we will present our results that show kHz QPOs in 4U 1636-536's persistent flux and nearly coherent oscillations at a frequency of 580 Hz during several Type-I bursts. We will concentrate on the frequency difference between the two persistent QPOs and its relation with the 580 Hz. We will also show the variation with time of the 580 Hz oscillation and the plausibility for it to be the neutron star spin frequency.
