[38.02] General Relativity in the Lagrangian Picture

D. Brown (NCSU)

A new approach to numerical general relativity, which applies to non--vacuum regions of spacetime, is presented. This approach is based on the Lagrangian picture in which the Lagrangian coordinates of the matter provide the spatial coordinate system. In this scheme the momentum constraints are eliminated and the Hamiltonian constraint is viewed as an algebraic relationship between the gravitational field variables and the rest mass density of the matter. After solving this algebraic constraint, the initial data are evolved by a true Hamiltonian on the gravitational phase space. The applicability of this scheme to various astrophysical problems will be discussed.
