Session 39 - AGNs, QSOs, Active Galaxies.
Display session, Wednesday, June 11
South Main Hall,
We report results from a \sim30 ks simultaneous RXTE and ASCA observation of the Seyfert 1.9 galaxy MCG-5-23-16. This observation was performed on 1996 November 29, and is part of a campaign to monitor the reprocessed X-ray flux in the form of Fe K\alpha line emission and Compton reflection. The 2-10 keV photon index (\Gamma = 1.83), absorbing column density (N_H = 1.63 \times 10^22 cm^-2), and time-averaged flux (F_X \sim 7 \times 10^-11 ergs cm^-2 s^-1) are similar to those obtained during the ASCA AO-1 observation in May 1994. However, the RXTE data allow us to unambiguously detect Compton reflection in this galaxy for the first time and we find Ømega/2\pi \sim 0.8 assuming reflection from a face-on accretion disk. Simultaneous fitting of the RXTE and ASCA data places tight constraints on the hard X-ray continuum, which in turn allow us to model the Fe K\alpha line profile with confidence. We confirm the presence of a broad Fe K component that was detected during the ASCA AO-1 observation. The time-variability of the Fe K line profile is investigated.
