[39.14] Mass Entrainment in Supermagnetosonic Extragalactic Jet Simulations

A. Rosen, P. E. Hardee (U.Alabama), D. A. Clarke (St. Mary's U.)

We have completed a set of 3D MHD equilibrium jet simulations that vary the jet-to-ambient density ratio and the magnetic field strength and orientation. With one exception run as a control case, the jets in these simulations have all been precessed at the inlet to excite Kelvin-Helmholtz (or KH) instability (primarily the helical mode). We will show simulated emission from these jets and transverse profiles of magnetic pressure at many positions along the jet axis. This presentation will focus on the growth of the linear mass density of magnetized or forward-moving material, either of which can be thought of as jet plus entrained ambient material, along the jet axis. In general, there are three stages of the growth the linear mass density: a region with an initially shallow slope followed by a region with a steeper slope and a region of little or no growth. These three stages seem to correspond to the growth of the KH instability from a linear regime through a nonlinear one, and ultimately to a saturation of the instability. The lateral expansion of simulated synchrotron emission appears to be related to the entrainment process. Also, some of these simulations have been completed at more than one resolution (at 9, 15, or 25 transverse zones per jet radius), which we will use to place some errors on the linear mass density plots.
