[48.03] Ultraviolet, Optical, and Infrared Observations of X-Ray Binaries: Progress and Prospects

The past few years have seen steady progress in the study of X-ray binaries at optical, UV and IR wavelengths. Large campaigns for radial velocity measurements have yielded new or improved dynamical masses for a number of neutron star and black hole candidate systems. Improvements in infrared detectors and spectrometers have opened up a new window, particularly for sources too obscured for optical observation. Ultraviolet observations with HST are providing unprecedented new probes of X-ray reprocessing in accretion disks. I will give a brief review of these developments and discuss the available and forthcoming observational resources in this era of coordinated multiwavelength study.
