The discovery of new planetary systems has dramatically broadened our perspective on planet formation and provided new arenas for the tools of celestial mechanics. I will review recent theoretical developments in our understanding of the formation and evolution of planetary systems, in particular attempts to explain two puzzles: the eccentric orbit of the planet in 16 Cyg B, and the presence of Jupiter-mass planets in orbits smaller than 0.1 AU (51 Peg, \upsilon And, etc.). I will also discuss the constraints imposed by long-term stability requirements.
