Exhibit Hall,
A zero-dimensional stability model that provides estimates of relativistic beam propagation distances and energy coupling to a background plasma is compared with two-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. The zero-dimensional model uses rate equations to evaluate the coupling of longitudinal waves created by beam/plasma instabilities to estimate beam propagation distances. The comparison between the two models is important because computational constraints prevent the PIC model from being used with astrophysically relevant parameters while the zero-dimensional model has been explicitly developed to treat this parameter regime. Preliminary results show good agreement between the models for propagation distance estimates. The PIC simulations show evidence of mass entrainment within the beam volume, an important characteristic not treated in the zero-dimensional model. A comparison of the wave energy levels calculated in both models will be presented and the implications of this work for relativistic beam transport in AGNs will be discussed.
