[62.01] The Masses of Clusters of Galaxies from X-ray Observations and Some Implications

J. P. Henry (U. Hawaii)

Mass estimates of clusters of galaxies from X-ray observations overcome some of the difficulties inherent in the classical virial analysis of the velocities of member galaxies. Of course, the X-ray technique also has its own uncertainities which must be understood before reliable conclusions are possible. We will summarize what has been learned about the visible and dark masses of clusters from recent measurements. We will also discuss some of the cosmological implications of this and other related studies clusters.
