Session 72 - Comet Hale-Bopp.
Display session, Friday, January 09
Exhibit Hall,
Imaging polarimetry at 1.55, 1.70 and 2.2 \mum and photometric imaging at 3.12 and 3.8 \mum of comet Hale-Bopp are presented. Considerable structure is seen in the fractional polarization map of the inner coma. The percent polarization is clearly higher in the jet material than in the general coma. The polarization is highest at the leading edge of the jet. The simplest interpretation is that the dust in the jet contains significantly smaller dust particles than the dust lifting off of the general surface of the nucleus and that the smallest dust particles are accelerated out ahead of the larger dust particles.
