Session 78 - Seyfert Galaxies.
Display session, Friday, January 09
Exhibit Hall,
We have calculated multicomponent photoionization models of the narrow-line region (NLR) in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548, and compare the model results to observed and dereddened emission-line ratios from UV and groundbased spectra. We present evidence for a high-ionization component of NLR gas that is very close (about 1 pc) to the nucleus, and optically thin to ionizing radiation. We also show that the majority of the emission in the NLR of NGC 5548 arises within about 70 pc from the nucleus. Thus the NLR in this Seyfert 1 galaxy is very physically compact compared to the typical NLR in Seyfert 2 galaxies.
